Recently while taking our daily walk, my husband and I came across a small stream in one of the hollows in our woods. I noticed that due to some freezing and thawing that a small slide of mud was beginning to change the channel. It would only be a matter of a few hours until the water would be cutting a new path down the hollow taking along with it good soil from the banks of the hollow. Since I was wearing my high top rubber boots, I stepped along side the water and began to use the toe of my boot to build back the side of the stream that had been destroyed by the mud. It wasn’t long until you could begin to see the channel changing and getting back into the former route that it had taken.
I have always been fascinated that I can change the channel of water with my boot, having done it many times along the back road if a side road drain would get clogged. A couple of adjustments with the toe of my boot and the water recedes off the road and back into the drain thereby preventing it from freezing on the road. As I stood there and watched the toe of my boot change the channel on this particular day, I was reminded that this must be similar as to how God looking from above made heaven and earth. I’m not implying that He used the toe of His boot, but rather how easy He made it look as He separated the water and the land on that third day of creation. Making an ocean here, a river there, a creek here, a stream from a mountainside, a hollow there, etc.
In Genesis, 1: 1, we get the description of how He began creation as we read, “In the beginning God created the sky and the earth. The earth was empty and had no form. Darkness covered the ocean, and God’s Spirit was moving over the water.”
And as the creation continues, in verses 9-13 it says, “Then God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered together so the dry land will appear.” And it happened. God named the dry land “earth” and the water that was gathered together “seas.” God saw that this was good. Then God said, “Let the earth produce plants – some to make grain for seeds and others to make fruits with seeds in them. Every seed will produce more of its own kind of plant.” And it happened. The earth produced plants with grain for seeds and trees that made fruits with seeds in them. Each seed grew its own kind of plant. God saw that all this was good. Evening passed, and morning came. This was the third day.”
I have always marveled at how God created. I have a great appreciation for nature and all of its wonders that it reveals. Next time you are looking at flowing water or something else in nature, I hope that you too will pause and reflect on how great our God is. There is no one or thing that can compare to our omnipotent God!!
Prayer: Thank you Lord for all that You have created for not only our survival, but for our enjoyment. We praise You and bow down before You. You are awesome!! Be with us Lord as we journey through life, that we may not only recognize all of your creation, but that we may reflect Your love wherever we may go as You would have us to do. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
